Job Hunting

"the job-hunt is nothing but a long process of rejection"
- p. 32, Richard Bolles, What Color is Your Parachute?

When looking for a job it is a marathon not a sprint.  Rarely does a job fall into someones lap, most people have to look hard for their first, second and even third job.  There are a few things that a job hunter can do to improve their chances drastically.  This is true for someone trying to find an internship, a career track job, a part time job or a summer job.

In modern times most people feel that the internet has all the job solutions.  Many employers post jobs online however if a job hunter only uses the internet as a way to apply for jobs there success rate is only 4% to 10% (p. 36-40, Richard Bolles, What Color is Your Parachute?). Although, if your applying for jobs at major universities, large organizations or state and national government the internet may be the only means to apply for a job.

Then what is the best way to hunt for a job?  Focus on small companies with less then 20 people, knock on doors, have other people listen for job leads and make it a 9 to 5 "job" to find a job (p. 40-46, Richard Bolles, What Color is Your Parachute?).  The process of finding a job is a marathon not a sprint, take your time, be prepared for lots of rejection and don't take it personally.
