Taking a Trip Somewhere?

Are you going on a weekend trip somewhere?  Remember the library has plenty of resources that can help you.  These resources range from travel guides to advice from librarians.  If we do not have a copy of the travel guide you want we can order it over Ohio Link or inter library loan for free.  Stop by the library before planning a trip and save money.

Here in the summer? Check out the County Fair!

Are you going to be around in early August and want to do something uniquely American?  Then go the Scioto County Fair!   A county fair is a great way to see United States culture.  Activities range from animal shows, food contests, carnival rides, to a demolition derby.  The cost of entrance is only $8.

What is an academic library in the United States?

In different countries the services that an academic library provides is quite varied.  Some countries limit library access only to professors and graduate students.  Other countries will only have the library open during certain hours for undergraduate students.

The Shawnee State University Library is open to all students, staff, administrators, faculty and community members anytime the library is open.  The library provides access to print and online sources in addition to computers some with specialized software.  There is also a small popular reading section that has current books ranging from adventure to romance.

The library is a space for solo work, group work and recreation.  In the past people have had small birthday celebrations, weekly Magic the Gather meetings and students just looking for a quiet place, away from student housing, to check FaceBook.

What can I ask a librarian?

Librarians are here to help all students with the research process and research.  First librarians can help you come up with or narrow/broaden a paper topic and research question.  Second the librarian can help you find scholarly sources that help solve the research question.  Third librarians can teach you how to use different print and electronic resources, including those beyond Academic Search Complete.

From 10 am to 7 pm Monday to Thursday and 9 am to 4 pm on Friday, during the academic year, a librarian is always on the reference desk to answer on demand questions.  Librarians are also available for research consultation that can be scheduled at the reference desk or with the librarian you wish to meet with. Librarians cannot write or edit a paper.
