The Clark Memorial Library at Shawnee State University was named in October 1997 in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde W. Clark, long-time Portsmouth residents and devoted supporters of the University. Their generous contributions have left a lasting impact on campus life and educational resources.
Mr. Clyde W. Clark, born in 1896, was a prominent local businessman who helped acquire controlling interest in the Ohio Stove Company—later known as OSCO Industries, Inc.—where he served as chief financial officer and secretary from 1943 until his passing in 1975. His leadership and dedication to the community were instrumental in shaping the region’s industrial growth.
Mrs. Clark further enriched the University’s educational offerings by donating the Clark Planetarium, established in 1998. The planetarium continues to support university instruction and community astronomy programs, reflecting the Clarks’ enduring commitment to education and public engagement.
